Rem atrocem nec tantum epistula dignam Larcius Macedo vir praetorius a servis suis passus est , superbus alioqui dominus et saevus , et qui servisse patrem suum parum , immo nimium meminisset .
A shocking affair , worthy of more publicity than a letter can bestow , has befallen Largius Macedo , a man of praetorian rank , at the hands of his own slaves . He was known to be an overbearing and cruel master , and one who forgot - or rather remembered to keenly - that his own father had been a slave .
THE atrocious treatment that Largius Macedo , a man of praetorian rank , lately received at the hands of his slaves is so extremely tragical that it deserves a place rather in public history than in a private letter ; though it must at the same time be acknowledged there was a haughtiness and severity in his behaviour towards them which shewed that he little remembered , indeed almost entirely forgot , the fact that his own father had once been in that station of life .
